Revamped Sewing Cave

I love pinterest for pictures :)
Sunday was a great day… Went to work for my last big study session before my test this Wednesday.  My classmates are a GREAT group of guys.  We have helped each other for the past 4 years, and I know that I will enjoy working with them over the years to come.  I feel confident that we are all going to pass & it’s going to be WONDERFUL.  We’ll be celebrating becoming High Voltage Substation Journeyman very soon!!!   After my study session, I came home and started working in my sewing room.  My wonderful husband picked me up some storage cubbies, while I was working Friday night. Isn’t he the sweetest!! J  I’ve been waiting for these to go on sale....Let the construction begin.....
Here's a couple pictures of the original space... the brown table was warped and the folding table bounced like crazy when I sewed.  I was having to put my wonderful ironing board away every day so I could get into the closet... and there really isn't much organization to work with... So I've been busy doing little things over the past few months... new shelves and other organizing tips I've found are available at a previous post. you can check them out by clicking here.

Here's what I did today....
I decided to modify my ironing board.. Yes I know… I just taught all of you how to make an oversized board…and mine is still oversized, but I took the ironing board legs off and used one of the cubbies underneath, so now I have extra storage.  I also put some felt on the bottom of the ironing board so it slides nicely when I need to get into my closet.  Now I can leave it up ALL the time… This WORKS AWESOME… {a couple people posted comments during my guest appearance about the idea and it caught my eye.}

I was using a folding table for a sewing table, and we recently went to Ikea and bought the wonderful cutting table top & very sturdy table & legs to use for a new sewing table.  It doesn’t bounce around like the folding table did.  MUCH BETTER!! I love that it faces the window so I get great natural light and can look out while I am sewing :)

Arnold making his Cameo appearances..
Then I removed most of the plastic storage bins out to the garage where I can use them out there… and built my New & Improved Cutting table with storage cubbies & adjustable legs to the perfect working height. No more backaches from leaning over AND I don’t have a bunch of different bins to look at from the Living room.. More organized looking (at least on the outside *wink*).  The adjustable legs on one end allow for me to use the space behind the cubbies for BULK storage - for Batting and such.   I’d prefer the table to be more to the left, so that I can drape fabric over the end of my sewing table, but I have a bulky computer table still to deal with on the other side...  Someday I’ll replace the computer table and shift this whole table to the left a bit J  We’ll have to see when the next sale is..[*giggle*].

I love all the light and how much more organized it is!

I also added a bookcase on top of another bookcase.  I now have floor to ceiling shelving for misc items… I kept the smaller plastic bins and put them in the lower part of the bookshelf...great place  to store notions, thread and misc small items.

So that’s it.. that’s my revamped sewing space.  I love it.   I’ve modified it quite a few times in the past few months.. but I am very happy with it how it's progressed and look forward to using this great creative space.

Do you have any sewing room tips you would like to share?  I’d love to hear them.... You know where I’ll be.. hehe.. in my new & improved Sewing Cave J
** Update.... I have had several inquiries about the PegBoard Ruler Organizer on the Wall.  You can make your own... CLICK HERE for link to the instructions on how I made mine!  :)
Have a great week everyone.. Probably won’t be posting again until after my test.  Take care and keep in touch.

Christine....good luck on your exam on Wednesday. My BIL has been teaching the High Voltage Journeyman course in Canada for 2 years now. He doesn't miss the cold winter storms, the winds and the ice. He is 60 now and teaching is easier on his old bones.....hehe. Have a great week!!

Christine, you have amazing spaces. Great minds think alike! Hubby made your super duper ironing board for me and we also took the legs off and I have stored my totes under the board . This is too funny...I posted about it today as well! You were so wonderful to share the instructions...I am a happy presser now! I hope your day(and night) job doesn't interfere with your sewing, 'cause you have a wonderful space to sew in. Cheers!

Is your kitty safe from the hole now?

Good luck with your exam! I retired to eastern WA from Kent the last day of 2011 and definitely feel for all the power workers in western WA having to deal with all the power outages. We have a foot of snow here (George/Quincy area) but fortunately haven't lost our power.

Love your blog as I'm just starting to quilt.

Love, love all you've done with your sewing room! The cubbies with the ironing board are great - like the storage behind them idea ;-) and the light over it - just wonderful!
Hope you do great on your test.

Great job - what are you using to hang your rulers? They are the hardest thing for me to keep track of and store.

What a wonderful job of organizing! Everything looks great...you are motivating me to get my room under control...I travel from my br(where my machine is) to the kitchen (where I cut) and back to the br (where the ironing board is)...I guess it's my quilting workout! Good luck on your test...I am sure you will do great!

I love your Sewing Cave. Well organized, bright & cheerful. I definitely love what you did with your rulers. I need to figure out something so my rulers are so unruly.

Thanks for posting the tutorials. I am in the midst of trying to make myself a big ironing station. I bought a bookcasae from Ikea to set a homemade top on, to give me storage underneath. I'm a bit stuck right now, but I'll sort it out. I am fairly mechanically minded and reading your tutorial gave me some more confidence that I can do this myself.

I don't want to screw my top to the bookcase so I want to ask you if yours sliding easily for the closet door, gives you any difficulty when you are ironging. Does it move around too easily?

And one more question, if I may ;-) Do you have a light under the shelft, over your cutting station? Or is the light just coming from the flexible lamp?

Thank you again for sharing your ideas.
